Từ “Chiffon” bắt nguồn từ tiếng Pháp là “Chiffe” có nghĩa là “vải mềm”. Thời trước, khoảng những năm 1700, vải Chiffon được làm từ lụa nên có giá thành rất đắt và chỉ dành cho giới thượng lưu, quý tộc thời đó.
Mãi đến năm 1938, chất liệu Nylon được ra đời, đánh dấu một sự chuyển mình lớn của thị trường vải Chiffon nói riêng và các loại vải khác nói chung. Nhiều doanh nghiệp mọc lên, tập trung vào sản xuất vải Chiffon từ chất liệu Nylon với giá thành rẻ và số lượng lớn.
Đúng 20 năm sau, tức là vào năm 1958, sự ra đời của chất liệu Polyester đã tạo thúc đẩy giá thành và chất lượng của vải Chiffon. Từ đó trở đi, vải Chiffon có giá thành rẻ hơn hẳn và dần trở nên phổ biến với nhiều tầng lớp xã hội.
Một trong những đất nước ứng dụng phổ biến vải Chiffon trong lĩnh vực may mặc nhất chính là Ấn Độ. Trang phục truyền thống ở đất nước này là Sarees có thành phần chủ yếu là Chiffon. Đặc biệt, ngành công nghiệp phim ảnh ở Ấn Độ là Bollywood cũng góp phần không nhỏ để quảng bá cho loại vải đặc biệt này.
