Herbal Teas: A Closer Look at These Healthy Beverages
Herbal teas have been consumed for centuries around the world for both their flavor and purported health benefits. While black, green, white, oolong, and pu-erh teas all come from the Camellia sinensis plant, herbal teas can be infusions made from a wide variety of plants, flowers, fruits, seeds, or spices. Some of the earliest recorded herbal teas date back over 5,000 years to Ancient China and India, where teas were traditionally prepared using ginger, liquorice, rosehip, hibiscus, and lemon balm.
Of course, most herbal tea benefits are based on traditional uses and further research is still needed. As always, moderation is key when consuming any beverages or herbs medicinally. But with few calories and multiple plant compounds in each infusion, herbal teas can absolutely be part of a healthy lifestyle.
