Laparoscopic Power Morcellator: A Game-Changer in Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery emerged as a less invasive alternative to open surgery in the late 1980s. However, removing intact tissue specimens large enough for pathologic examination posed a major challenge during minimally invasive procedures. In the early 1990s, gynecologic surgeons began using electromechanical instruments called laparoscopic power morcellators to fragment tissue for removal through small incisions.

Today’s advanced morcellators use bag-based containment methods shown to successfully prevent potential dissemination of occult malignancies. New containment technologies incorporate extra strengthening materials like Kevlar into plastic bags rated for high RPM use. Others employ dual polymer bag chambers or active insufflation to eliminate any chance of perforation.
