A topic calling for images that were "odd" or "wrong" in some way surfaced on the paranormal discussion board of notorious website 4chan in May 2019. One user uploaded a picture of an abnormally huge open room with ugly yellow wallpaper, dollar store fluorescent lighting, and carpet that was common in dental offices in the early 1990s. The photograph had a dutch perspective that gave the scene a slightly ominous appearance. The Backrooms were created after another user submitted the moving description above.
