HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) are not the same thing, although they are often used interchangeably. HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system and can lead to AIDS if left untreated. HIV attacks and destroys CD4 cells, which are a type of white blood cell that helps the body fight infections. As HIV destroys more CD4 cells, the immune system becomes weaker, making it harder for the body to fight off infections and diseases.
