There is no direct answer to how many horsepower does a horse have. A horse does not have a horsepower rating in the same way that an engine or motor does. However, the term "horsepower" was originally coined by James Watt, a Scottish engineer in the 18th century, who used it to compare the output of steam engines to the work done by horses.

Watt estimated that an average workhorse could perform about 33,000 foot-pounds of work per minute, and he used this as the basis for his definition of one horsepower. So, one horsepower is equivalent to 33,000 foot-pounds of work per minute or approximately 746 watts of power.
