What is the Meaning of Vitro Fertilization?
In vitro fertilization is a complex series of procedures that improves your chances of pregnancy. It involves monitoring and stimulating a woman’s ovulatory process, removing an egg (or ova) from her ovaries, and combining it with sperm in a laboratory. An embryo is then transferred to her uterus.
Your doctor will give you fertility medications for several months to encourage your ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs for fertilization. This step is called ovulation induction. You may also get regular ultrasounds or blood tests to measure your hormone levels and monitor your ovulation. If you do not have a lot of mature eggs, your doctor might use another fertility treatment to help -- intrauterine insemination (IUI). This is less expensive and invasive but has a lower success rate per cycle than IVF.
The next step is known as follicular aspiration. During this procedure, your doctor uses an ultrasound wand to locate a follicle that contains an egg. Then, with a hollow needle, your doctor removes the egg and fluid from the follicle. Your doctor will mix the egg with your partner’s sperm in the lab to form an embryo.
